General cargo ship holed, taking on water, central Vietnam – Maritime Bulletin

General cargo ship VIET PHU 16 in the morning Jan 16 suffered underwater hull breach, under unclear circumstances. Understood the ship hit some underwater object, or contacted bottom, and started to take on water, southwest of Cu Lao Cham island, Quang Nam Province, central Vitnam, East China sea. Ship’s bottom in two cargo holds was holed, also ship’s bow was said to be damaged. She was ordered to approached shallow waters of Cu Lao Cham island, to avoid sinking – understood to intentionally run aground? The ship with 2330 tons of cement on board is en route from Hai Phong to Chu Lai, Quang Nam Province. No leak reported so far.
