Foxconn opening smaller factory than originally promised

RACINE COUNTY (WISN) — A one-million square foot factory now stands on Foxconn’s land in Racine County.

But that’s a much smaller factory than was originally promised.

President Donald Trump originally talked about 13,000 jobs.

Now, the talk is about 1,500.

It’s unclear when factory workers will actually have jobs at the facility. The factory is expected to be up and running sometime later this year.

Plans for the project have changed several times, but state Republican leaders remain optimistic.

“Anybody can go on Twitter right now and they can look at Foxconn aerials every day. And they see the work that’s happening,” said Assembly Speaker Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester).

“So I think all the things that were promised, a lot of them are happening. Maybe not as fast as we had wanted. But the end result is what’s most important. And, that’s what the president cares about too,” Vos said.

“I think it’s moving forward. And, that’s a good thing. Because I want them to succeed. But again, I want them to have accountability and transparency,” said Governor Tony Evers (D-Wisconsin).

The state has challenged whether Foxconn has met enough of the original promises to qualify for state tax benefits.

WISN 12 News reached out to Foxconn for a comment, but did not get a response.
