Food 4 Vets, in partnership with the USDA Farmers to Families program, wrapped up five mobile food distribution drives in Barnstable on Oct. 31 and is moving on to Sandwich and Orleans this month.
“We had to go to registration and add this site (Orleans) because of the increased need,” said Don Cox, president and founder of the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation.
“It’s getting bad across the state with the spike in (COVID-19) cases, loss of outside seating at restaurants, and the holidays coming.”
Families in need are invited to register online at www.mmsfi.org to pick up a box of food on the following dates between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., or while supplies last:
Wednesdays, Nov. 11, 18 and 25 at the Orleans Distribution Center at Cape Cod 5 parking lot, 19 West Rd., Orleans 02653
Tuesdays, Nov. 10, 14, 24 and Dec. 1 at the Sandwich Empowerment Center at 117 MA-6, Sandwich, 02563.
Food4Vets provides well-balanced, prepackaged perishable food boxes to combat the massive food insecurity problem posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each food package contains 32 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and meat products.
The mobile distribution process follows all COVID-19 health guidelines. Participants have limited interaction as they pick up their food boxes onsite from volunteers.
Since March, MMSFI has provided more than 5 million meals and 23.5 pounds of food to Massachusetts residents in need.
