Fire destroys excavator in Hopkinton – News – Milford Daily News

HOPKINTON – An excavator was destroyed Wednesday when its engine caught fire, authorities said.

No one was injured at the 2:30 p.m. blaze at the E.L. Harvey & Sons Inc. site on Wood Street, Fire Chief Stephen Slaman said.

Firefighters arrived to find the heavy piece of construction equipment on fire. They quickly extinguished the fire, but not before the excavator was destroyed.

“It’s pretty heavily damaged,’ said Slaman. “It was fully involved when they got there.”

The cause of the fire is not known, but is not considered to be suspicious.

Excavators are used for such tasks as digging trenches, material handling and brush cutting.

Headquartered in Westborough, E.L. Harvey is a full-service waste hauling, transfer and scrap recycling operation. It’s family-owned and has been in business since 1911, according to its website.
