Environmentalists have roped in experts to explain why Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe is wrong to include the construction of new coal-fired power plants in a long-term plan that aims to provide the country with reliable and efficient energy.
The department’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019 intends to add 1 500MW of new coal-generated electricity by 2030, even though it supported a diverse energy mix for the country, which included coal, gas, nuclear, wind, solar and hydro.
