EPA action and US recycling policy during Biden’s 1st year in office

The year began with questions about how President Joe Biden’s administration would impact antitrust policy affecting mergers, environmental justice initiatives affecting disposal sites, federal relief spending affecting green infrastructure opportunities in local governments and much more.

Since then, the U.S. EPA has a new administrator and nominee to lead waste policy. Plus, the agency released its long-anticipated landfill emissions, a National Recycling Strategy and updated PFAS guidance.

In Congress, Democrats were able to pass an infrastructure package with key grants and provisions from the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act and RECYCLE Act. In total, the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has about $350 million for recycling, with those impacts poised to play out in the years to come.
