Dungeness crab has quietly reached Bay Area markets and restaurants. Here are nine places to go

While the Bay Area’s commercial crabbing season is still delayed, it just opened in California north of the Sonoma-Mendocino County line. That means Dungeness crabs are making their way to Bay Area restaurants and markets this week.

With less crab to go around, not all restaurants that might normally carry the local delicacy will immediately have it. But it’s still good news for Bay Area families who enjoy celebrating holidays with Dungeness after a crab-less Thanksgiving.

The Bay Area is justifiably obsessed with these crustaceans, which taste extra rich and buttery compared to other crabs and require zero accompaniments. That said, local restaurants offer other options, such as crab sandwiches, salt-and-pepper crab, garlicky roasted crab or chilled crab served simply with butter.

Here is a running list of restaurants and markets offering California Dungeness, in alphabetical order. (If your business is carrying local Dungeness and you want to be added to this list, email [email protected].)
