Digital platforms and how they can extend Procurement’s influence

On Tuesday, July 12, SAP and Spend Matters will be running a webinar on the ‘what,’ ‘why’ and ‘how’ of digital platforms for procurement, explaining the concept of digital platforms and introducing SAP’s own product, SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).

Our own Pierre Mitchell, Chief Research Officer and Managing Director at Spend Matters (with 25 years procurement and supply chain industry and deep consulting experience, and a recognized procurement expert specializing in supply processes, practices, metrics, and enabling tools and services) will start the conversation by explaining exactly what we mean by the ‘digital platform’ concept, and why a ‘platform strategy’ is important.

“It’s basically a way to create a common set of foundational blocks for the SAP ecosystem of apps and third-party apps to be built on,” he explains. “So the whole SAP infrastructure in this case, including HANA, MDM, Analytics, data warehousing, application development, AI capabilities, and so on, becomes a unified environment that lets you extend what you have or build your own structure to create greater agility, business value and innovation.”

Pierre will lay out the different types of digital platform, the various elements within them (infrastructure, data, apps, SaaS) and the digital requirements for the platform. He’ll then explain what that means for Procurement. He’ll talk about the issues that the Business and Procurement are facing and how they map to the capabilities of a digital platform such as BTP. In that, he’ll outline what digital platforms can be used for, by whom, and in which scenarios.

Once that premise has been laid, Frank Omare, SAP’s Global BTP Program Lead, will explain the concept behind SAP’s BTP, and what the platform brings to SAP’s customers. He’ll also get into how BTP can help us incorporate sustainability into our procurement processes and improve our sustainability outcomes.

Nikolaus Kirner, SAP’s own Chief Procurement Officer and accomplished CPO and Transformation Director, in a real-life use case scenario will explain how he, as a BTP customer, uses the platform, the value he derives from it and what he is hearing from other CPO users. That will lead into how BTP’s extension capability can extend the influence of procurement by giving some examples.

Martine Booth, SAP’s Head of Business Development Strategy EMEA and MEE, a procurement expert and a known as a strategic and creative thinker, will add her own thoughts to the digital platform concept, and how they relate to BTP.

This will be a conversation-style one-hour webinar, that will include time for audience questions. So if you are a SAP customer, part of the SAP community, a Head of Centre of Excellence, a CPO, are responsible for the systems in your procurement organization, or simply are interested in the digital platform concept to enhance Procurement’s reach and influence, then this will be a fascinating webinar for you.
