Coronavirus-plagued ship leaves Australia for the Philippines

A coronavirus-ridden ship anchored off the coast of Pilbara in Western Australia has finally set sail for the Philippines when the state recorded five new cases in hotel quarantine.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority cleared the Vega Dream for departure on Wednesday evening after the ship had been anchored about 25 miles off the coast of Port Hedland for days.

Seven crew members of the ship chartered by BHP had contracted COVID-19, one of whom had completed their hotel quarantine in Perth.

“In line with its commitment to humanitarian aid, the WA Department of Health offered assistance to the COVID-19 positive crew. However, since no medical intervention is currently required, this has been refused, ”the ministry said in a statement.

“Before the voyage began, experts from the Ministry of Public Health advised the ship on infection prevention and control.

“The freight forwarder was also offered access to the department’s ship deep cleaning plans, which were used for the successful and safe management of Artania, Al Kuwait and Patricia Oldendorff.”

After the ship left Port Hedland on Sunday, it fell under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth, but the Washington government continued to offer assistance.

After the bulk carrier Patricia Oldendorff, the Vega Dream was the second ship to arrive from Manila within a few weeks with crew members affected by viruses.

Meanwhile, a woman aged 20 who traveled to Perth from England and is in hotel quarantine tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday.

Five more cases were reported overnight – three women and two men between the ages of 25 and 30 who are in hotel quarantine after traveling to Perth from India, Nepal or Brazil.

The total number of confirmed cases of WA is 709.
