Loma Prieta quake focus of exhibition

The Los Altos History Museum, in partnership with the city of Los Altos, marks the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake with the exhibition “Our Community Prepares: Acts of Nature, Then and Now,” on display through Jan. 19.

The exhibition highlights the stories of lives shaken by disasters in the area, and ways the community has worked together to prepare for natural disasters in the future. In a series of free workshops, families and individuals can learn how to protect themselves and their pets in the event of earthquakes, wildfires, floods and other acts of nature at home and work.

Related programming includes the event “Be Prepared for the Big One,” scheduled 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 11 at the museum. Attendees can take a ride on the Big Shaker, the world’s largest mobile earthquake simulator, and experience what an earthquake feels like.

Space is limited and registration is required.

Cal Water and Los Altos Community Foundation are corporate sponsors of “Our Community Prepares.”

The Los Altos History Museum is located at 51 S. San Antonio Road.

City offers grants to prepare for disasters

The city of Los Altos’ Community and Emergency Preparedness Grants Program funds projects aimed at encouraging residents and small businesses to improve emergency preparedness, build community and strengthen neighborhood ties.

Grants are available for qualified projects that support the program’s goals to enhance community resiliency by proactively preparing for emergencies and strengthening the community’s ability to respond to and recover from emergencies, disasters and crime, and to increase communication and bolster connections within the Los Altos community.

For a neighborhood to qualify for a grant, applicants must be Los Altos residents and the neighborhood must be registered as a Block Action Team or a Neighborhood Watch group, or be in the process of registering as one.
