Cleveland police Det. Lisa Mielnik filed unauthorized criminal charges in a case by handwriting in a charge on court documents already signed by a city prosecutor.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cleveland police domestic violence detective is under criminal investigation for adding an unauthorized charge to a man’s case, and city prosecutors failed to tell the man’s defense attorneys for nearly 11 months, according to records obtained by cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.

Det. Lisa Mielnik’s actions in December 2020 set off a slew of inquiries, including a review of cases she has investigated. The matter has also raised questions about how police and the prosecutor’s office responded to Mielnik’s actions.
