Baoneng Motor appoints former Geely’s VP as executive VP

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Guan Yu, former Vice President of Geely Automobile group, has been named Executive Vice President of Baoneng Motor, the automobile unit of Chinese property conglomerate Baoneng Group, to be fully accountable for the company’s operational business, according to a document recently issued by Baoneng Motor.

Meanwhile, Toshiaki Otani, who also serves Executive Vice President at Baoneng Motor, will manage the operation of Hongpeng New Energy, Foresea Seven Swords and Liandongyun, the battery manufacturing, software and car rental companies backed by Baoneng. He will directly report to Guan Yu.

According to the public information, Mr. Guan has had worked in automotive industry for nearly 30 years. Prior to the appointment, he had played important roles of purchasing and sales departments at many automakers like SAIC General Motors, Foton Motor, Hawtai Motor and Geely Auto.

After Mr. Guan accepting roles in Baoneng Motor, Toshiaki Otani will devote more energy to the development of EV-related core parts (batteries, electric motors and electric control units), auto-related software and intelligent driving technologies, and the building of its mobility ecosystem, said company. He will co-work with Guan Yu on constructing a full industrial chain covering the R&D of complete vehicles and cutting-edge technologies, the manufacture of vehicles, the R&D and production of EV core parts, warehousing, transportation, mobility service, auto-related finance and after-sale services.

The Baoneng-backed Qoros Auto announced last week it would roll out five new models in 2021, including an all-new compact sedan, two REEV (range-extended electric vehicle) models and the refreshed versions of the Qoros 5S and the Qoros 7.

In addition, Baoneng Motor intends to release a premium auto brand this year that targets the likes of Tesla and NIO, according to an internal mail sent by Toshiaki Otani. The first model under the brand will be launched and hit the market in 2021 as well.
