ABERDEEN, UK – The Norwegian Coastal Administration has awarded ASCO NOK21 million ($2.11 million) to help develop and digitize its supply base in Leirvika, in the Hammerfest region of northern Norway.
Work has started and the Hammerfest terminal will be operational later this year, serving as the new logistics starting point in the region, ASCO said. The base serves various local industries, including offshore oil and gas.
The company will use the grant in part to introduce smart technology at the base, with the increased electronic data capture bringing time and cost reductions.
Planned efficiency improvements include streamlining freight flow for sea-based transport and logistics chains.
ASCO Norge chief digital innovation officer Christopher Hoftun said: “The efficiency gains will offer time savings, estimated at 80% for trucks and 20% for vessels, which emphasize that this will also provide an environmental benefit.
“The vessels will have a shorter lay time at the quay resulting in less noise and CO2 [carbon dioxide] emissions.”
