Around 3,51,320 quintal rice to north-eastern states for distribution to migrants: FCI

GUWAHATI: To provide food grain to the migrants under the relief measure announced by the Centre recently, 351320 quintals rice is allotted as additional allotment for seven states of North East.

Food Corporation of India (FCI) in a statement stated that as part of the Economic Measures (Atma Nirbhar Bharat), Government of India has allocated free food grain for the migrants, who are not covered under National Food Security Act (NFSA) or State Scheme PDS Cards, @ 5 kg per person per month free of cost for two months (May & June, 2020) to mitigate their plight during this precarious COVID-19 situation.

Government of India will bear the entire cost on account of such distribution including food subsidy, intra-state transportation, dealer’s margin/additional dealers margin etc. without any sharing by States/UTs.

“351320 quintals free rice allotted under the scheme as additional allotment for seven states of North East. Government of India has directed FCI to supply free food grain to the respective state government for further distribution to the Migrants,” FCI stated.

Executive Director, FCI, NE Zone has requested all Food Secretary of North East states for immediate lifting of rice allotted under the scheme and also directed FCI field offices to supply free rice to state government on requisition. It has been informed by FCI that adequate food grains are available in their depots in all seven states to meet the demand under all schemes including NFSA, PMGKAY & additional allotment under new scheme for Migrants.
