Arhtiyas end boycott, procurement begins in Karnal | Chandigarh News

KARNAL: Paddy procurement began in Karnal district on Thursday after arhtiyas (commision agents) ended their boycott of PR paddy procurement process following an assurance by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar of accepting their demands. Arhtiyas had boycotted the procurement process over the last five days, due to which procurement agencies had failed to begin the procurement operation and farmers had resorted to protests.
On Thursday, deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav held a meeting with the representative of Karnal Arhtiyas Association, grain markets secretaries and representative of all four agencies — Hafed, Food and Civil Supplies, Warehouse and FCI. He said the agencies concerned will ensure lifting of procured paddy within 24 hours and in case of failure to do so, arhtiyas can transport the paddy on their own level. The government has also agreed to procure paddy with 19% moisture content, with some conditions, he added.
Yadav directed the procurement agencies to lift paddy immediately after procurement so that farmers do not face any problems. The government will procure every single grain and the limit, which was earlier 25 quintals per acre, has now been raised to 30 quintals with 10% additional paddy, he added.
The Karnal Arhtiya Association president said, “We have ended the boycott as the government has agreed to accept most of our demands.”
Yadav said of the 2.11 lakh quintals of paddy arrivals at the grain markets of the district, 60,000 quintals was procured by government agencies on Thursday.
