Aldi adds beer, wine, alcohol delivery service in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — Discount grocery chain Aldi Inc. has begun delivering alcohol products through its delivery partner, Instacart, the company said Thursday. Delivery of beer and wine is available nationwide where permitted by state and local laws, officials said, including the St. Louis region.

Customers can place their orders for groceries, household products and alcohol on the Instacart website or by downloading the Instacart app. Customers ordering alcohol must be at least 21 years old and will be required to present a valid ID at the time of delivery. Aldi is offering free delivery for first-time customers with an order of $35 or more with code ALDIHOLIDAY19 until Dec. 31; other fees and taxes may apply, officials said.

“The busy holiday season is fast approaching, making convenience more important than ever, and adding alcohol delivery to our online offerings is one more way ALDI saves you time,” Scott Patton, vice president of corporate buying for Aldi U.S., said in a statement. “You can have a bottle delivered to your doorstep in as fast as an hour.”

Germany-based Aldi, whose U.S. operations are headquartered in suburban Chicago, began offering grocery delivery through Instacart in August 2017, adding the St. Louis market when it rolled the service out nationwide, to nearly all of its stores, a year ago.

Schnuck Markets expanded its delivery options through Instacart in February this year to include wine, beer and spirits for Missouri and Illinois deliveries.

Instacart also offers alcohol delivery for St. Louis-area liquor stores Friar Tuck and Total Wine & More, among others.

Dierbergs Markets and Target offer alcohol delivery in the St. Louis market through logistics partner Shipt, which is owned by Target Corp. And on-demand delivery service goPuff offers alcohol delivery from its St. Louis-area warehouse, and alcohol-delivery startup Drizly began service here in 2014.

Aldi has more than 1,900 stores in 36 states. Last year, it began a more than $5 billion initiative to remodel 1,300 stores and add hundreds of locations, with plans to reach 2,500 stores by the end of 2022. In St. Louis, Aldi previously said it was investing $49 million to remodel stores in order to make room for new products. At this time, 19 of 37 remodels in St. Louis have been completed, officials told the St. Louis Business Journal on Friday.

Save-A-Lot opened a new store Thursday at the site of the old Pete’s Shur-Sav Market in the city of St. Louis’ Hamilton Heights neighborhood. Pete’s, at 1331 Union Blvd., closed in December 2016, causing concerns about worsening a “food desert.” The city last year approved a 10-year tax abatement for the Save-A-Lot development, estimated then to cost $3.5 million.
