Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmud has given directives for launching legal action on allegations of corruption and bribery against local government representatives and influential goons, involving the government rice procurement program.
A report in this regard was submitted to the chairman of the commission by its intelligence unit on Sunday.
The ACC chairman said: “We have been informed through an intelligence report that government officials, employees, and their supporters [local goons] are taking bribes from farmers in the govt rice procurement program.”
He added that the commission had also received such allegations through social media.
The ACC chairman told intelligence unit officials: “ACC officials need to ensure area-based surveillance of the government’s rice procurement program. You need to make sure that local influential goons cannot create pressure on government officials and take government rice illegally.
“If you receive such allegations [of corruption], you will immediately form a special team and visit the spot. I will take legal action if necessary. Conduct immediate operations. You have to prevent and suppress corruption. That is the ACC’s official and legal responsibility,” he added.
