1,864 Factory Workers Died In 8 Years, Alleges Congress | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: The opposition Congress said on Monday that 1,864 workers have lost their lives in industrial mishaps during the past eight years because of laxity by government departments and corruption in factory inspection procedures.
State Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that according to official figures, 16.93 lakh workers are employed at 31,500 factories in the state. “Gujarat has the dubious distinction of recording the highest deaths of factory workers among all states because industrial safety rules are openly flouted and the government has been neglecting the safety of those working in factories.
Doshi said that despite several instances of serious industrial mishaps where workers have lost their lives, government departments have not been doing enough to prevent such instances. “The government thinks that the problem is solved by giving monetary compensation to the families of those who lose their lives. It is not interested in taking concrete steps for industrial safety,” Doshi said.
