Indore: Last date of slot booking for wheat procurement has been extended till April 17 after not even 25% of the farmers registered with the state government in Indore showed interest to sale the agriculture produce at the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,015/quintal for their being offered higher prices in open market as the main reason. In Indore, around 37,500 farmers (compared to about 51,000 wheat producers in 2021) have registered with the state government to sell their crops at MSP, for which, the last date of slot booking was fixed as April 13.
Till Wednesday, around 9,300 farmers had booked slots to sell their crops to the state government on different dates. “On Thursday, the last date of slot booking was extended to April 17 while the wheat procurement process will continue till May 15” Anand Goley, a senior officer at the food, civil suppliers, and consumer affairs, said. He added that a total around 97 procurement centres have been erected in Indore and in the last around a fortnight (From March 28 to April 13), a total about 19,750 metric ton wheat could be procured there.
According to senior administrative officials, the farmers are being offered higher prices by the traders of their wheat crops than the MSP as their main reason behind selling the crops in the open market. Due to the same, the administration is expecting procurement of around 1.5 lakh metric ton wheat crops in this Rabi season against the prediction of 3 lakh metric ton.
The sources claimed that in wholesale grain markets (mandi) situated in Indore, Ujjain and nearby districts, wheat of ‘mill quality’ (ready to process in flour mill) is presently sold at not less than Rs 2,100/quintal while the good quality wheat is being offered the rate upto Rs 2,700/quintal. TNN
