Caddo taking applications for $100,000 Ring camera distribution

Caddo Parish wants to help its residents keep an eye on their neighborhoods which is why the Parish will begin taking applications March 14 for its $100,000 Ring surveillance camera distribution program.

If selected, applicants will receive one doorbell camera along with complementary installation and a year-long monitoring subscription.

Participants in the program must agree to register their cameras with the Shreveport Real Time Crime Center, a city run 24-hour surveillance program powered by camera access from residents and businesses.

The Caddo Parish Commissioners who introduced the doorbell camera program suggested a network of cameras patrolling the parish could help mitigate violent crime.

The program is first come, first serve and would operate for a year as a pilot program.

To participate, a person must be a resident of Caddo Parish who is at least 18 years old and does not have a gross annual income that exceeds 80 percent of the Area Median Income.

“The Caddo Parish Commission is committed to public safety and to protecting quality of life, and this program will aid in those endeavors and helping to provide peace of mind to our citizens,” said Commissioner Stormy Gage-Watts, who introduced the ordinance allocating funds for the program and sponsored it along with Commissioner Lyndon B. Johnson.

“The data and information will help us decide if this is a program we want to carry on after the first year,” said commissioner Lyndon B. Johnson.

Gage-Watts said the program is inspired by one that has found success in Chicago.

Gage-Watts added that the program is for citizens in “hot spot areas that are plagued by gun violence.”
