Fargo mayor expected to issue new order on COVID-19 precautions

FARGO — Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney is expected to issue a new executive order this afternoon, Friday, Nov. 13, pertaining to the city’s rules regarding COVID-19 precautions.

In mid-October, Mahoney used his emergency powers as mayor to issue a mandatory mask order requiring the wearing of face coverings in the city.

The order also encourages all stores and businesses to adopt policies prohibiting entry without wearing masks.

The mandate announced at the Oct. 19 City Commission meeting affects residents in all indoor and outdoor environments where wearers are exposed to non-household members and where social distancing of six feet or more cannot be assured.

At the time it was issued, the mask order did not carry any penalties for violations. It is possible the new executive order expected today would outline potential penalties.

When Mahoney issued the mask requirement in October, he cited a steadily increasing number of cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19.
