Costco drops medical exemption, will require all customers wear face coverings

Wholesaler Costco is dropping its medical exemptions and will now require all customers to wear face coverings in its stores, according to an announcement on the company’s website.In a letter to members, President and CEO Craig Jelinek wrote that entry will be granted only to those wearing a face mask or face shield.Costco’s previous policy, issued May 4, allowed an exemption from wearing a face covering for members who had medical conditions.The new policy goes into effect Nov. 16. Children under the age of 2 are exempt.“This updated policy may seem inconvenient to some, however we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience,” Jelenik wrote. “Our goal is to continue to provide a safe shopping environment for our members and guests, and to provide a safe work environment for our employees.”Costco also urges that the use of a face covering should not be a substitute for social distancing and that members who are unable to comply have delivery options on Costco.com.Related video: Pandemic expected to fuel holiday shipping surge
