5 injured in Narayanganj cement factory fire

The incident occurred when the factory workers were cleaning a coal-burning machine at the factory

As many as five people have sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a cement factory in Narayanganj.

The incident occurred when the factory workers were cleaning a coal-burning machine at a factory of Bashundhara Cement in the district’s Madanganj area around 10:30am on Sunday.

The injured — Saifuzzaman Sohag, 40, Abul Kalam Azad, 28, Rahatul Arefin, 28, Dewan Ali, 50, and Masud Rana, 25 — were rushed to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said: “Sohag, who is an engineer at the factory, has sustained 30% burns in his body.”

“The injured are now being treated at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and all five of them are now out of danger,” he added.

Meanwhile, citing eyewitnesses and the workers at the factory, Azgar Hossain, in-charge of the Madanganj police outpost, said: “We visited the scene of the accident after being informed. 

“A special type of powder, which comes from coal, is required for cement production. The machine that is used to make this powder is inspected and cleaned regularly. The fire broke out on Sunday morning when the factory workers tried to clean it.”

Contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandar police station Fakhruddin Bhuiyan said: “A total of five people were injured in an explosion at a factory of Bashundhara Cement.” 

“Our men have visited the scene and the matter is under investigation.”
