Training complete for three Marblehead fire recruits
Sixty-one recruits graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy and three were from the Marblehead Fire Department. William Boardway, Richard Ehlert and John Morris each completed the 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program at the Springfield campus.
“First responders are on the frontlines protecting their communities, and these newest firefighters are needed now more than ever,” said State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey. “The rigorous professional training they’ve received provides them with the physical, mental, and technical skills to perform their jobs effectively and safely.”
Recruits are put through their paces in the classroom, under non-fire conditions then during controlled fire conditions. To graduate, Broadway, Ehlert, and Morris had to demonstrate proficiency in life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation, and fire attack. A fire attack could include anything from a mailbox fire to a multiple-floor, multiple-room structural fire.
They were also schooled in things such as the latest science of fire behavior and suppression tactics. They receive training in public fire education, hazardous material incident mitigation, flammable liquids, stress management, and self-rescue techniques.
Why
Because today’s firefighters deal with far more than just fires. Firefighters train to respond to all sorts of hazards and emergencies such as chemical and environmental emergencies, which could be a gas leak or a Fentanyl overdose. They might be called to rescue a child who has fallen through the ice or who has locked himself in a bathroom. They rescue people from stalled elevators and those who are trapped in vehicle crashes. Because, in short, they have to be ready for anything and everything.

Marbleheader Jo-Mary Koopman named President/CEO of All Care
Chief Operating Officer and 31-year veteran of Lynn’s All Care, Jo-Mary Koopman has been promoted to President/CEO, effective immediately.
Koopman takes the reigns from long-time President/CEO, Shawn Potter who is ready to begin his long-awaited, and well-earned, retirement.
“In every position Jo-Mary has held at All Care, she has led with passion for transformative health care and championed delivering the highest quality of care to our patients,” said Potter. “All Care has benefited from Jo-Mary’s experience, work ethic, accomplishments, and operational excellence. Her outstanding leadership skills will assure All Care a bright future,” added Potter
Koopman joined All Care in 1990 as a community health nurse. She has seen massive changes in home health care since, including the shift from paper-based documentation to electronic medical records, the enormous changes in government reimbursements and just recently the challenges of leading an organization through a global pandemic. While many other agencies were forced to close or downsize, Koopman helped All Care flourish and grow. All Care now serves 65 communities and performs more than 185,000 visits annually throughout the North Shore, Eastern MA, Greater Boston and the Merrimac Valley.
“All Care will continue to prosper under the direction of Jo-Mary. She is committed to taking the organization to the next level to meet the growing needs of our community now and in the future,” said Board Chair Jay Fenton.
“I have very big shoes to fill, but I have learned from one of the best,” said Koopman. “I share Shawn’s commitment to home care and the critical part it plays in the larger health care system. I’m looking forward to leading the next chapter for All Care.”
