Workers without salary, Eid bonus staying in Gazipur factory

Workers of GM and JC Composite Limited in Gazipur have been staying in the factory since yesterday (April 30, 2022) as they did not get salary of April and Eid-ul-Fitr bonus.

According to some workers – Sinthia, Halima, Aminul and Riaz, the factory authorities were expected to give salary and Eid bonus yesterday noon but in the afternoon they came to know that the admin officials left without disbursing salary, our Gazipur correspondent reports.

The workers also alleged that several of them went to the owner’s house at Uttara in Dhaka but could not meet him. So, they returned and held a peaceful demonstration inside the factory. They bought some food for iftar and sehri and stayed in the factory last night.

The factory’s Accounts Officer Md Mofazzal Hossain agreed that the workers were right and said that the authorities could not pay the salary and Eid bonus due to some banking issues.

Gazipur Industrial Police Inspector Abdur Razzak said that they contacted the owner and the authorities. They were supposed to come to the factory this afternoon (May 1, 2022).

There are 447 workers at the factory and they are trying to coordinate with the factory admin, and the district admin. A process to pay the dues to the workers would be undertaken today, the official said.

Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman said, “BGMEA knew of the development. The factory owner switched off his phone and we are trying to contact him. We are requesting the workers so that they do not go for any chaos.”
