MARGAO: Residents of Fatorda and Margao feel that the much discussed and controversial issue of Sonsoddo dump yard will remain unresolved for another five years, as both MLAs of the respective constituency will be sitting in the opposition group.
The residents are very much upset with the above issue, since the second major fire incident reported in recent days. The scenario at the Sonsoddo dump yard clearly indicates that the people need to bear with this problem for many more years, as there is no system in place or no dedication to resolve it from the concerned authorities.
It is pertinent to note that the result of the Assembly elections clearly shows that the Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat will be sitting in the opposition for another five years. And hence, it will be very tough for them to press the upcoming BJP government, to resolve the garbage issue on urgent basis.
People of Margao and Fatorda are also of the opinion that the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat failed to resolve the issue for the last many decades, despite being the Chief Minister. And on the other hand, the hard efforts of Vijai Sardesai went in vain, despite being in the government two-and-half years ago.
“Yes, it is an issue of concern not only for the people of Fatorda, but Madgavkars too. There were expectations that both the concerned MLAs of Fatorda and Margao would be in the government, which would have helped to resolve the Sonsoddo issue, but the situation went the other way,” said Peter Fernandes from Fatorda.
According to Pravin Naik, a resident of Borda, now the new government needs to take this issue very seriously so that the people will not suffer anymore.
“Now, who will be able to take up the issue with the new government? We have seen in the past that our political leaders failed to resolve the issue, despite being in the government, and hence it seems that we need to bear with the stink and pollution at the Sonsoddo for many more days to come,” he said.
Chetan Borkar, a resident of Margao said people are faced with the problem of Sonsoddo dump yard, besides the issue of waste management in Margao for the past several decades.
“I doubt that both the MLAs of Fatorda and Margao will be able to do anything pertaining to Sonsoddo by sitting in the opposition. They will not be able to do anything great, besides raising their voices in the Assembly,” he said.
However, he urged both the MLAs to take the challenge through the Margao Municipal Council, which is under their control and prove that they are capable of resolving the Sonsoddo issue.
It is pertinent to note that the bioremediation of the legacy dump at Sonsoddo is yet to be completed, and at the same time there is no space left inside the old plant to dump more waste, generated on the day-to-day basis.
The request letter from the MMC for the permission to transport 10 tonnes of waste from Margao to Saligao Waste Treatment Plant is also pending before the Goa State Pollution Control Board for the last many days. This permission was sought in wake of the recent major fire incident reported at Sonsoddo.
