LA CROSSE (WKBT) – The Wisconsin Legislature has passed a bill that increases penalties for those who distribute fentanyl.
Representative Jill Billings (D-95th district) was one of the authors of the bill.
It would raise fentanyl distribution penalties equal to those for the delivery of heroin.
“Fentanyl is an incredibly dangerous drug,” Billings said. “We know that overdoses in Wisconsin, as in most states, has increased in the last two years due to incredibly isolating times.”
Billings says Governor Evers is expected to sign the bill.
Right now, someone who delivers fentanyl can face a $50,000 fine and 15 years behind bars.
People who possess and intend to distribute heroin could face a possible $100,000 fine and up to 40 years in prison.
