Westerlay establishes eco-friendly local supply chain | Business

Westerlay Orchids has taken another step towards lowering its carbon footprint. The Carpinteria-based nursery is partnering with the Santa Barbara-based Por La Mar Nursery to introduce “Locally Grown” gardens. “Locally Grown” gardens offer a collaborative, artisanal mix of locally cultivated flora utilizing hometown resources to help minimize outbound freight from across the country.

As two multi-generational Santa Barbara businesses with deep roots in this community, we have always enjoyed a close relationship with Por La Mar Nursery,” said Westerlay owner Toine Overgaag. “Recent discussions about how we can collaborate for the greater good led us to develop these gardens as a creative solution to centralize our live supply chain and help cut carbon emissions.”

By using Por La Mar’s products in their “Locally Grown” gardens, Westerlay will eliminate the need to truck similar plants to the region from other states, including Florida, and a local supply chain helps Westerlay reduce its overall carbon footprint.
