Waste leaders breaking down recycling and disposal process for concerned residents

SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – The Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority and waste haulers are breaking down the recycling and disposal process and providing some clarification to viewers at home.

“Our garbage trucks are set up for dual pick-up,” said North Country Disposal Co-owner, Gordon Lamere.

Prior to Wednesday’s visit, North Country Disposal, along with Waste Management and Great American Disposal, say they received a few calls regarding the way they’re handling recyclable products.

Some community members thought their recycling products were being thrown away in the back of the hauler trucks with the rest of waste.

But it’s actually the complete opposite.

“We just want to make sure that people understand that, because they see us throwing the trash and the recycling away at the same time in the back of the truck that it is going to two different compartments,” explained Lamere.

What many people don’t realize with the splitting process is that trash is disposed at the tipping pad, and then recycling is brought to the floor.

“We have a large investment into an upgrade to our recycling program, and I think it’s important that we start at the curb with the residents, placing materials curbside properly, but also assurance that this material is being collected by the private haulers in the county, and in turn being delivered to us and processed in those commodities that are going to markets throughout the Midwest,” explained Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority Director of Operations, Brad Austin.

If anyone has any additional concerns to address, they’re asked to contact the landfill authority or your hauler directly.

Tours also are available to those interested.
