La Crosse, Wis. – (WXOW) – Plenty of volunteers were on hand for a WAFER food pantry drive-thru event. The December food distribution featured some extra items to help with the holidays.

Plenty of volunteers of all ages lending a hand at WAFER’s food pantry event.

First, a partnership with Feed the Children resulted in a delivery of 4 pallets of various new toys. Everything from small child shape cubes to dolls and Funko pop figures were available. Additionally, Channel One Regional Food Bank provided frozen food packages and assorted produce.

Other volunteer groups passed out socks, hats and mittens to anyone wanting them.

“This is just fun to come out here and help people,: said 7th grader Lainey Clarkin. “Especially now that they have toys that can provide some Christmas presents.”

The organizers set up a drive-thru system of two lanes, so cars could pull up and let volunteers load up trunks and backseats. While the process made the work go faster, it still allowed for plenty of good tidings and well wishes for a merry Christmas.

“It’s wonderful and amazing,” said volunteer Jana Kirch. “All the volunteers that come out to help and seeing all the people come through, it’s just heartwarming.”

In total, some 300 families were able to receive the special food boxes and 400 families were able to get the toy related packages.

“You know, we live and work in these communities, our heart and soul is in these communities, so we try to do what’s right,” Kirch said.
