The American Red Cross, Los Angeles Region, is calling for volunteers to help with the distribution of free meals for Los Angeles Unified School District students.

Students who would have received meals at their schools have been offered food at distribution centers since the coronavirus emergency forced statewide school closures.

The Red Cross needs 160 volunteers per day to perform a variety of tasks at more than 50 distribution centers. Work includes loading and unloading trucks, assisting in the setup, sanitation and stocking at the centers. A supervisor with the LAUSD, supported with a Red Cross team leader will direct the work needed.

Volunteer requirements include these abilities

  • Lift/carry 20-50pounds multiple times/shift

  • Walk on uneven terrain
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Step up/down 18 inches and climb two or more flights of stairs
