Victoria coronavirus case leaves Woolworths distribution centre staff in Laverton walking off the job

Dozens of Woolworths workers have walked off the job at a distribution centre after a reported positive COVID-19 case.

On Monday, about 80 workers stopped work at the warehouse in Laverton North, which provides alcohol to Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores.

Woolworths said it was made aware of a positive coronavirus case at the warehouse on Friday and had taken all the necessary steps as advised by the DHHS.

United Workers Union Logistics Industries Director Matt Toner says the staff want a 72-hour deep clean and all workers to be tested.

“Workers will keep taking action like this until these big companies like Woolworths put their safety, and the safety of the community, ahead of profit,” he said in a statement.

“We have seen this a dozen times already.

“Each time the company tries to downplay the virus and keep operating… there’s 50 or 60 COVID cases.

“The best plan Woolies can make is to go hard now and send all workers home with pay so they can be tested and do a proper deep clean.”
