Scott Leigh, director of pharmacy at UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge, holds the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccine doses. Manufacturers have encouraged agencies receiving doses to not hold back on giving initial doses, saying manufacturing will quickly ramp up to provide enough for a second dose by the time each patient needs it.

Dr. Mike Willerth receives a COVID-19 vaccine Thursday at UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge. Two doses, taken three to four weeks apart, are required to vaccinate each person. The number of Pfizer doses received this week in Webster County could not be ascertained by press time. Assuming the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine also receives FDA approval for emergency use, state officials said Iowa can expect to receive 138,300 doses of the vaccine in weekly waves by the end of the month.
