Using EVs as emergency power sources in disasters

The Japanese government plans to compile a manual on how to use electric vehicles, or EVs, as a power source when natural disasters cause power failures.

During a prolonged power failure after Typhoon Faxai in September, EVs and plug-in hybrid cars were used to charge mobile phones at evacuation shelters and to supply electricity at care homes.

Auto dealers have been receiving an increasing number of inquiries on how to transfer electricity from vehicles.

That led the industry ministry and automakers to put together a manual.

It will explain that some models have outlets into which cables can be plugged directly.

Other vehicles need special connectors or can supply power after following procedures outlined on displays in the vehicles.

Local governments plan to ask automakers to provide EVs when natural disasters strike. The manual will explain how to effectively use EVs along with power generators and power-generating vehicles.
