Upcoming Food Distribution Events in and around Plainfield

PLAINFIELD, NJ — Friday walk-up food distribution events at Plainfield High School and Maxson Middle School will include some extra giveaways, and a drive-up Union County sponsored event on Saturday will be held at Union County Vocational Technical School in Scotch Plains.

FRIDAY, FEB. 26

Chef Andre James shared on Facebook that oven ready pizzas will be available at Maxson Middle School along with weekend school meals. One whole oven ready pizza is available per family, and the opportunity is on a first-come, first-served basis. Maxson Middle School is located at 920 East 7th Street.

Over at Plainfield High School, three days of school meals will be distributed along with USDA Farmers to Families food boxes to students and family members. One box per family will be available. Plainfield High School is located at 950 Park Avenue; the distribution event will be held in the parking lot outside the cafeteria. This is a walk-up event.

Both food distribution events will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies last.

According to the contest, chefs from around the globe compete in an exclusive online competition to be named the world’s Favorite Chef, receive $50,000 and be featured in a two-page advertising spread in Bon Appétit magazine.

The competition will donate a portion of the proceeds to Feeding America®, the nation’s largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a nationwide network of food banks.

Chef Andre answered:

  • How long have you been cooking? I’ve been cooking for 25 years.
  • What is your signature dish? My signature dish is Paella.
  • What will you do with the $50,000? If I win this contest. The prize money will go to The City of Plainfield Public School Food Service Department.

Voting for the top 10 chefs ends Thursday, March 4 at 6 p.m. As of this writing, James is third in his group. Vote daily here.

 

SATURDAY, FEB. 27

A drive-up food distribution event for Union County residents to aid those affected by COVID-19 will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Union County Vocational Technical School, located at 1776 Raritan Rd in Scotch Plains beginning at 9 a.m.

The food distribution is open to all Union County residents, and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and no registration is required. The event will take place rain or shine. Residents must arrive in a vehicle — walk-ups will not be accommodated. Proof of New Jersey residency is required.

Recipients will receive non-perishable items and fresh produce, with enough to sustain a family for several days. Only one box of food will be provided per vehicle.
