Watson-Marlow breaking ground on new factory

A U.K.-based fluid power products manufacturer and solutions provider has broken ground on its first factory in the U.S., which will be set in New England.

Watson-Marlow, headquartered in England’s southwest tip, began construction Nov. 18, 2021, on a 150,000-square-foot production facility in Devens, Massachusetts. The plant will produce the company’s peristaltic pumps, tubing, fluid path solutions, and BioPure components.

Nestled alongside life sciences hubs in Boston and Cambridge, the new facility will serve customers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical diagnostics, and process industries.

Watson-Marlow expects the factory to open in late 2022 and begin shipping products near the end of the year. The company said the expansion will create approximately 150 jobs.

“This exciting development is bringing us closer to our customers whose purpose is to help the world around us, from advancing cell and gene therapies to ensuring people have access to clean drinking water,” the company’s managing director, Andrew Mines, said in a news release

The new facility will include eight cleanrooms — with room for two more — along with a warehouse and offices. The company said the factory will be modeled after its European locations.

Watson-Marlow has operations in 44 countries and over 1,700 employees worldwide. It is a subsidiary of industrial engineering firm Spirax-Sarco.
