Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Tuesday boycotted the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament over a series of issues, including the Centre’s irresponsiveness on paddy procurement from the State and suspension of 12 MPs among others. The TRS MPs staged a walkout from both the Houses and protested outside the Parliament. They said they were boycotting the entire Winter Session, as the Centre failed to respond to their demands to procure rice from Telangana.
Earlier, the TRS MPs staged protests in both the Houses and obstructed the proceedings. In Rajya Sabha, MP K Keshava Rao demanded that the Centre procure pending paddy from the State immediately as lakhs of tonnes of paddy failing which it will get decomposed. He strongly opposed the Centre’s discrimination towards Telangana in paddy procurement. They will stage a sit-in protest at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Parliament premises.
Since the Winter Session of the Parliament started on November 29 last week, the TRS MPs disrupted the Parliamentary proceedings, demanding the Union government to give an assurance on paddy procurement for ensuing Yasangi (Rabi) season and also lift the rice stocks lying with the State government. For the last six days, they staged protests near the Speaker’s podium in Lok Sabha and the Chairman’s podium in Rajya Sabha. They raised slogans and also displayed placards, disrupting the Parliamentary proceedings and demanding justice for farmers of Telangana State.

They gave adjournment motions seeking discussion on farmers’ issues, national uniform procurement policy and also legal assurances to provide Minimum Support Price (MSP) to farmers, but the same were rejected. Further, the Centre did not give any concrete assurances and instead, went on to blame the State government for delaying delivery of Custom Milled Rice (CMR).
