U.S. trailer orders in January were 29,100, up 94% from the same month last year, ACT Research reported, citing manufacturers’ initial data.
A year ago, orders were 14,997, according to ACT, which, in a release called this January’s preliminary net total in line with expectations.
“The industry continues to see solid interest from fleets for equipment acquisition. The slower order pace versus December [when orders were 43,806] was also anticipated,” said Frank Maly, ACT director of commercial vehicle transportation analysis and research.

He added order boards for dry vans and refrigerated trailers at many trailer makers are filled late into the year.
Trailer makers so far have been reluctant to open order boards for 2022, and fleets are reluctant to extend spending plans out that far, Maly said.
FTR pegged preliminary U.S. net trailer orders at 30,000.
Orders should continue to ease down due to the lack of available build slots, said Don Ake, FTR vice president of commercial vehicles. “The challenge right now is for trailer makers to fill near-term orders due to raw material and component shortages.”
