TOKYO, KOMPAS.TV Toyota is investing 730 billion yen ($5.6 billion) in Japan and the United States (US) to boost the production of electric vehicle batteries.

But global demand for electric vehicles is expected to increase in the coming years as gas prices rise and concerns about the environment grow.

The new US law provides incentives for making batteries in North America, including a tax credit of up to $7,500 for consumers, which can be used to finance the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle.

To qualify for the full credit, electric vehicles must have batteries manufactured in North America in which 40 percent of the metal has been mined or recycled on the continent.
