CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL)- Together We Achieve said it successfully distributed all 1,000 planned food boxes on Sunday, despite a last-minute scramble to get them all packed.
The Cedar Rapids non-profit said an individual with a hateful email signed up for ten volunteer spots to pack the food boxes but did not show up.
In a Facebook post on Sunday morning, Together We Achieve said they were able to make up for being short-handed because other volunteers stepped up and helped make up for it.
“While their actions were clearly meant to target and hurt those that operate the resources center, their hatred was combated and defeated by many volunteers who stayed beyond their original commitment and others showed up after finding out we were short handed,” they wrote. “We will not allow this hatred to hurt our community or our mission.”
The non-profit put out an urgent plea for volunteers. On Sunday, it thanked its “dedicated volunteers” who answered that call and offered a message for the person responsible.
“Many people depend on the monthly food box distribution to meet their needs with the skyrocketing cost of food and fuel,” they wrote. “To the person who committed this act: we are sorry your heart is so full of hatred that you have attempted to take food from the tables of children, elderly, the disadvantaged and potentially your family and neighbors.”
