Three workers critically injured in Demra factory accident

Five workers sustained burn injuries from melting iron at a steel mill in Dhaka’s Demra area early Sunday.

Of them, Al Amin, Jasim Uddin and Imran Hossain are now undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Partha Sanker Pal, residential surgeon of the hospital.

The other two, Junu Bepari and Didar Hossain, left the hospital after taking first aid.

Al Amin sustained 26 per cent burns, Jasim sustained 20 per cent burns, while Emran sustained 40 per cent burns, Partha said.

The incident happened at about 1:00am when some workers were melting iron at the factory in Konapara area, said fire service deputy director for Dhaka district Debasis Bardhan.

An explosion took place inside the furnace and melting iron started to pour out.

Workers tried to escape the spot; but the liquid iron fell on five of them leaving them injured.

Fire service officials said that the accident probably took place due to some electric faults.
