The image of Gene Wilder dressed in a top hat and purple jacket is one that takes us straight back to our childhood – so we’re thrilled that the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is coming to Netflix this autumn.
Hitting the streaming service on September 1st, the 1971 movie classic is a nostalgic favourite that burned many a scene on our brains.
Who could forget the Oompa Loompa song? (Sing it with us: doom-pa-dee-do).
Or that Violet Beauregarde scene with Denise Nickerson as the swollen, bratty bubblegum-chewer?
Starring Wilder as the legendary sweet creator, Peter Ostrum as Charlie Bucket and Jack Albertson as Charlie’s devoted grandpa, the fan-favourite film brought Roald Dahl’s beloved 1964 children’s book Charlie & the Chocolate Factory to life.
The plot (as if you needed reminding) follows poor but hopeful Charlie as he hunts down one of five coveted golden tickets which will scoop him a tour of Willy Wonka’s famed and mysterious chocolate factory.
Netflix UK & Ireland tweeted that it would be dropping the Mel Stuart-directed movie in September – and the good news is that Tim Burton’s 2005 version will also be added to the steaming platform.
Anyone else feel a Charlie & the Chocolate Factory marathon coming on, accompanied by sugary snacks?
Also dropping 1st September, the noughties movie spin on Roald Dahl’s book was even zanier than the first.
Starring a ghostly white Johnny Depp as the eccentric confectioner, the movie combined cartoonish quirks with a darker edge.
Elsewhere in the cast, Freddie Highmore took on the role of Charlie and David Kelly was Grandpa, while Helena Bonham Carter played Mrs Bucket.
Both Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (2005) land on Netflix on September 1st.
