“The first snow in Antalya, after 29 years, is affecting prices”

For Fresh Maximum Ltd from Stuttgart, Turkish citrus is selling very well right now, as junior managing director Enes Cakmak (pictured right with Abdullah Bulut) tells us. “The citrus season continues to run without any problems. Especially the Murcott as well as Nadorcott clementines and the oranges show an excellent quality, which is why we have very good sales. Also very popular are the Primofiori lemons from Spain, which we sell in 500-gram nets to wholesalers as well as retailers. So I have absolutely no complaints.”

Fresh Maximum was able to offer the first citrus as early as November, with the season coming to a close in the next two to three weeks. “Demand is very high, much higher than in recent years, due in no small part to the excellent quality. Because of this, we have also gained many new customers, some of them local,” says Cakmak. “We work with many wholesalers and retailers throughout Europe, whom we supply with our own trucks.”

Snow in Antalya after 29 years
The business has also been affected by high prices in transportation. “In addition, it has snowed in the Antalya growing area for the first time in 29 years, which, along with transportation costs, has had a strong impact on prices. In general, it was difficult for us to find suitable goods for a while,” Cakmak notes. He has also seen good sales in his range of pomegranates and quinces, although the season for these products is coming to an end soon. Some interest in dried persimmons from Turkey, as it were, has been observed by Cakmak. Cakmak also offers vine tomatoes from Turkey and beef tomatoes from Spain and Morocco, although prices for these are extremely high at the moment.

In Turkey, work is also underway on suitable alternatives to plastic packaging “in order to be able to keep the entire environment clean,” as Cakmak recounts. “This was also a very appealing topic in the last trade fair by the Turkish export association BAIB in Berlin two years ago.”
