Production of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y has been temporarily halted in order to upgrade its manufacturing capacity.

Demand for Tesla’s electric vehicles has been growing at a rapid rate, with this upgrade expected to improve manufacturing times and increase annual output.

In a tweet the following weekend, CEO Elon Musk remarked Tesla “didn’t expect demand to be so high”, and was “working on accelerating RHD [right-hand-drive] Model Y production”.

Some reports suggested the company’s Shanghai plant has been working at half capacity, thanks to ongoing supply problems and outbreaks of COVID-19 in the city.
