Swire Shipping celebrates 150th anniversary

What started out as the China Navigation Co in 1872 operating Mississippi-style paddle steamers on the Yangtze River is today an international shipping company headquartered in Singapore.

The company was rebranded as Swire Shipping in October last year bringing together containerised, breakbulk, heavy lift and project cargo transport all under one umbrella brand.

The company recently held a re-opening for its Singapore office which had undergone extensive renovations, which was attended by Sam Swire, Chairman of Swire Shipping.

He paid tribute to the company’s workforce through the pandemic, “I’m proud of how everyone adapted and there has been no discernible drop in safety standards.”

Looking ahead decarbonisation is a major focus for Swire Shipping. “As a member of the global shipping community, we are keenly aware of the need to work with like-minded organisations and partners in developing safe and sustainable solutions. It is our intention to be on the front foot,” he said.
