A bit about us

The Commercial and Procurement Team based within Somerset County Council is looking for two ambitious individuals who will operate within a complex and dynamic environment, ensuring the provision of a consistently high quality, professional service to our internal customers. You will help lead a collaborative and professional team that drives through the Council’s vision, enabling Commissioners to achieve outcomes that improve the lives of people in Somerset.

Here’s what you can expect to be doing

Both roles, working with the Head of Service, will work collaboratively to manage a diverse and challenging portfolio of procurement or commercial projects and have a focus on strong relationship management. These are critical roles for us as you will be key advisors and contacts, helping to shape how we procure goods and services and how effectively our contracts are managed.

The roles will each have a slightly different focus, one will be responsible for the procurement function, collaborating with commissioners and suppliers to deliver best value for Somerset.  The second post will play a pivotal role in the effective management of our commercial team, leading a programme of commercial contract reviews to ensure maximum benefit and value is being achieved.

Together these roles will support the full commercial and procurement cycle, from working with senior managers in identifying and developing purchasing requirements, through to procurement and supply chain engagement strategies, running competitions, negotiating contracts and driving optimisation opportunities within current commercial matters.

You will be expected to bring challenge and new thinking to the team and wider organisation, as well as drive continuous improvement and innovation.   We need individuals with the expertise, skills and determination to shape and deliver our ambitions.

A few things about you

Whilst technical commercial and procurement skills are essential, we are also looking for individuals who are agile and flexible, able to embrace change, operate strategically and be commercially astute.

We are keen to hear from any individuals who want to join us to help deliver our future ambitions at what is a challenging yet exciting time.
