The largest selection of Steinway and Steinway-designed pianos anywhere happens once a year at the historic Steinway & Sons Astoria factory. Though it normally is held in May, this year it will take place from Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25.
Steinway & Sons announced the return of its highly-anticipated Factory Selection Event, a once-per-year opportunity to save thousands on the finest pianos in the world. This event, typically held in May but postponed this year due to the global pandemic, will take place Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25 at the historic Steinway & Sons factory in Queens. The four-day sale will be a celebration of Steinway’s renewed production of the world’s finest pianos, despite a four-month factory shut-down earlier this year.
The Factory Selection Event is a New York tradition. Each year pianists, piano teachers, students, and professional artists wait for the opportunity to visit the famous Steinway factory to play and select from more than 100 stunning pianos representing the biggest selection of Steinway and Steinway designed Boston and Essex grands and uprights at the lowest prices of the year. All recommended safety and social distancing guidelines will be in effect during the sale.
After its founding in 1853 in Manhattan and multiple New York City expansions, Steinway & Sons purchased the land where the Astoria factory stands more than 150 years ago and opened the factory soon after. Piano production has continued on this site – mostly unabated – through the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, two World Wars, and the Great Depression. During World War II, the factory was used to build gliders as part of the US war effort, as well as special “Victory Vertical” pianos that provided live music to troops on the front lines.
The 2020 Factory Selection Event will feature new pianos as well as genuine Steinway certified pre-owned pianos and vintage Steinways. In addition, due to extensive cancellations of concerts throughout the year, Steinway will release a huge inventory of pianos from its famed Concert & Artist piano bank for sale at unprecedented prices.
“The return of the Factory Selection Event is cause for celebration,” said Ron Losby, President and CEO of Steinway & Sons. “This is one of our most popular annual events, and we hated to have to postpone it in May, especially as we see so many people turning to the piano during quarantine. Now we’re back, despite the pandemic, and we’re doing what we do best – building the greatest pianos in the world. It’s incredible to see the dramatic upswing in piano lessons among adults and children and to see how people use music to help get through difficult days. We hope this sale will enable more people than ever to bring the magic of Steinway into their homes.”
Special financing will be available, and trade-ins will be accepted. Inventory includes pianos from the entire Steinway line:
Steinway: The piano by which all others are judged—built by hand by experienced artisans since 1853.
Boston: Designed by Steinway & Sons and employing Steinway’s unique patents and expertise, the Boston line offers a superior playing experience at a price level never before thought possible.
Essex: The Essex incorporates Steinway & Sons’ latest design specifications and engineering standards, as well as the Steinway commitment to quality craftsmanship, all at an entry-level price point.
To maintain social distancing, all selection visits are by appointment only, and all pianos will be sanitized between each use. To make a selection appointment, call 1.877.STEINWAY
