A Tennessee manufacturer of steel structural systems this week officially announced the opening of its third U.S. factory in northern Indiana.

VersaTube Building Systems, which produces kits for do-it-yourself steel construction projects, said the 22,000-square-foot plant in Elkhart, Indiana, began operations in May. The facility created 20 new jobs initially, with more hiring expected “as additional manufacturing projects are assigned.”

VersaTube, which also operates facilities in suburban Memphis and suburban Phoenix, cited Elkhart’s skilled workforce history as a manufacturing hub — particularly for recreational vehicles — as well as its proximity to a major distribution center for home improvement giant Menards, a key retail partner for the company.

The company also credited rising demand for its structural kits in recent years, which can be used to make carports, garages, barns, sheds, commercial buildings, and other shelters.

“We are proud of our new facility and look forward to building a strong, lasting presence within the community of Elkhart,” Bruce Ostrander, the company’s co-owner and vice president, said in the announcement.
