The vision of Awesome Fresh is to totally eradicate fresh food produce wastage in Nigeria by acting as a link between farmers and micro food processors.
AWESOME Fresh, an agricultural aggregation, logistics, and cold chain company, is set to help smallholder farmers connect with a stable and consistent market for their products.
Awesome Fresh will link farmers directly with local and international food processors who will use their products as raw materials for value addition.
In a recent chat with the Founder of Awesome Fresh, Mr Adetiloye Aiyeola, he reiterated that the vision of Awesome Fresh is to totally eradicate fresh food produce wastage in Nigeria by acting as a link between farmers and micro food processors. This will in turn create a more sustainable life for the farmers.
“In Nigeria, over #3.7 billion of fresh food products are wasted annually due to lack of effective post-harvest handling and temperature-controlled supply chain from farm to table. Access to a stable and consistent market is usually out of reach of the smallholder farmers and micro food processors who produce more than 70% of food products in the country.
“In Sub-Saharan Africa, nearly 94% of all wasted food is a direct result of insufficient supply chains. An estimated 55% of fruits and vegetables, 22% of meat, 35% of fish and seafood, and 20% of dairy is lost or wasted due to lacking post-harvest handling and cold chain infrastructure. These post-harvest losses are causing food insecurity in our country and increasing our reliance on imports,” Aiyeola explained.
He also reiterated that Awesome Fresh is on a mission to help make food more accessible and affordable to all by connecting smallholder farmers, often in high production areas, with local manufacturers and markets, helping to maintain freshness along the value chain.
Mr Aiyeola affirmed that Nigeria’s greatest need is an effective and economically viable food distribution system that will totally integrate the supply chains of all commodities from the farms to the consumption centres, thereby reducing physical waste and loss of value.
He said, in an effort to supply this need, Awesome Fresh, in the last 14 months has worked with more than 120 farmers in the North-central region of the country to create consistent market access and moved more than 438 metric tons of fresh farm products.
This, he avowed, has helped to reduce post-harvest losses between farm and market and bring innovation and organisation into agriculture and food distribution.
