According to the procurement notice, the procurement concerns sections four to six.
The southeastern border, where the Estonian, Russian and Latvian frontiers meet, has long been subject of controversy over the inadequate nature of border markings – to the extent that it is theoretically possible to be brought perilously close to the border with the Russian Federation when using navigation apps such as google maps, and complications over cross-border travel for those whose families were separated by the border delineation, dating back to the Soviet era.
The section stretches just under 40 km, from the north short of Lake Vanigojärv to the village of Võmmorski (see map).
The procurement includes the drafting of a work project for infrastructure sections, conducting additional geological studies and the construction of project layout including patrol tracks, access roads, obstacle fences, animal barriers, power supply and micro-pipes for data communication.
Bids can be submitted until the afternoon of October 6.
The remainder of Estonia’s border with the Russian Federation runs through Lake Peipus (Peipsi Järv) and along the Narva River. Estonia and Latvia are both in the Schengen Zone so border controls are generally not imposed, though were reinstated at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.
